MARIETTA, OHIO — Grace Bobo, a student in Washington State College of Ohio’s (WSCO) Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) program, is shaping a bright future through hard work and focus. Set to graduate in July 2026, she proves that dedication can make any educational goal attainable.
Before beginning her OTA career at WSCO, Bobo found herself in WSCO’s Respiratory Therapy Technology program during her senior year of high school. While she enjoyed the experience, she realized it wasn’t her true calling. After taking a year away from college, she discovered WSCO’s newly offered OTA program, a decision she now calls life-changing. “I felt destined for something more, so I returned to school to learn, grow, and pursue my purpose of helping others through the Occupational Therapy Assistant program,” she shared.
One of her favorite aspects of the OTA program is the hands-on fieldwork. “It’s inspiring to watch someone accomplish something through occupational therapy that they couldn’t have done on their own,” she said. Although the coursework can be challenging—especially after stepping away from college for a period of time—her passion for learning and helping others keeps her motivated and engaged.
Bobo’s long-term goal is to work in pediatric occupational therapy, supporting children as they reach milestones they might not otherwise achieve. While self-confidence in a learning environment hasn’t always come easily, she has figured out how to overcome doubt through persistence and the guidance of her mentors.
She credits much of her success to WSCO’s faculty and staff, including her advisor Amanda Stilgenbauer, who has been a trusted mentor from day one, and OTA professors Melissa Hedges and Chad Schneider, who continually encourage her to grow. “They truly want me to succeed,” Bobo said. “I know I can reach out anytime to ask questions or discuss anything, and they’ll be there for me.”
Schneider praised her commitment to her education stating: “Grace demonstrates focus, drive, and a strong desire to learn. She seeks extra support when needed and consistently strives to excel in her skills and knowledge. She will make an outstanding Occupational Therapy Assistant and a positive influence in her field.”
Through determination and hard work, Bobo has navigated a demanding program successfully. Her story highlights the support and opportunities at WSCO and reflects a journey centered not just on career goals, but on positively impacting the lives of others. “WSCO has given me the guidance and confidence I needed,” she said. “I’m proud of how far I’ve come and am excited for what’s next. I feel prepared to take on the challenges and make a real difference in the lives of the people I’ll serve as an Occupational Therapy Assistant.”
