What Is the Criminal Justice Technology Program Like?

The career outlook for law enforcement is strong, with an estimated 70,000 job openings each year across the country. At Washington State College of Ohio, our Criminal Justice Technology program gives you the knowledge, skills, and confidence to pursue rewarding careers in law enforcement, courts, corrections, and private security or to continue your education in a four-year criminal justice program.

You’ll build a strong foundation in the three elements of the criminal justice systemβ€”law enforcement, courts, and correctionsβ€”and learn how to collaborate effectively within each to serve the greater good.

What Will I Learn in the Criminal Justice Technology Program?

Our five-semester associate degree combines classroom instruction with hands-on training and practical field experience. You’ll learn from seasoned professionals whose combined experience spans more than seven decades in law enforcement and criminal justice. Guest speakers and current industry professionals bring real-world insight directly into your classes, keeping your education relevant and up to date.

You’ll gain skills in:

  • Understanding criminal and civil law
  • Learning the rights of plaintiffs and defendants
  • Conducting crime scene investigations and evidence collection
  • Using fingerprinting, blood analysis, and other forensic equipment
  • Applying incident command and emergency response principles
  • Collaborating with law enforcement, courts, and correctional systems
  • Participating in MILO simulation training and community-based exercises to develop decision-making, tactical, and interpersonal skills in realistic scenarios
Is the Criminal Justice Technology Program Online?

Coursework consists of in-person classes and hands-on field training, which is required to complete the course competencies. Regular attendance is a crucial part of this program.

How Does the Professional Practice Experience Work?

Students will be placed with a professional at one of our local institution partners. If you live outside the 20-mile campus region, you’ll work with the Professional Practice Coordinator three semesters in advance to secure a local placement and establish a site agreement.

What Degree Will I Earn from This Program?

You will earn an Associate Degree of Applied Science in Criminal Justice Technology.

Certifications earned include National Incident Management System (NIMS) ICS 100, IS 700, ICS 200, IS 800, and Hearing Distressing Voices.

Graduates of the WSCO Criminal Justice program are prepared for entry-level positions such as:

  • Police Officer
  • Correctional Officer
  • Court Clerk or Bailiff
  • Probation or Parole Assistant
  • Private Security or Loss Prevention Specialist

Some individuals choose to pursue further education with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice or a related major.
