MARIETTA, OHIO β After taking some time away from college, Katie Stevens returned to Washington State College of Ohio (WSCO) with a renewed sense of purpose, and sheβs thriving. Now working toward her associate degree in WSCOβs Business Management Technology program, Stevens is showing that with determination, patience, and the right support system, success is always within reach.
Currently, Stevens works as a student worker in WSCOβs Business Office, where she handles a variety of responsibilities including scanning and indexing documents, digitizing files, and assisting students with questions. She credits the experience with helping her develop real-world skills that directly connect to her coursework. βItβs really rewarding to apply what Iβm learning in class to my job,β she said. βIt helps everything click.β
Stevens plans to graduate next fall and hopes to continue her education by pursuing a bachelorβs degree in business, potentially at Franklin University. Ultimately, she envisions herself working in a collegeβs business office or financial aid department, perhaps even continuing her career right at WSCO. βWorking here has truly inspired me,β she shared. βItβs made me want to stay and work full-time one day.β
Originally drawn to the program for its connection to Human Resources, Stevens quickly realized that a WSCO business degree offers something even more valuable, versatility. βItβs such a broad degree that opens up a lot of opportunities,β she said. βNo matter where I end up, I know Iβll be able to use what Iβm learning.β
Like many college students, Stevens has had to find balance between her coursework, job, and personal life. Her secret? Patience and perspective. βI remind myself that it will all come together,β she said. βI focus on a few assignments each day so I donβt get overwhelmed.β Sheβs grateful for the understanding of her supervisor, who allows flexibility when schoolwork needs to come first. Stevens has continued to excel, maintaining a 4.0 GPA at WSCO.
Her nominator, Maddie Galloway, describes Stevens as βa great example of perseverance and
commitment to success.β Galloway added, βKatie has faced challenges that might have set others back, but she continues to move forward with a positive attitude. She takes initiative, helps others, and sets an example for what hard work and determination look like. Weβre all incredibly proud of her.β
Stevens credits much of her success to the strong, student-focused support network at WSCO. She
expressed gratitude for the entire OneStop team, who have encouraged her every step of the way.
βTheyβre all so supportive, and it really feels like a family here,β continued Stevens.
For Stevens, being part of the WSCO community has been life-changing. βI love going to WSCO. Itβs
affordable, close to home, and filled with people who want to see you succeed,β she said. βIβm proud to be a student here and would encourage anyone thinking about college to check it out.β
From returning to college after a long break to balancing academics, work, and personal goals, Stevensβ story reflects the WSCO experience, one built on resilience, support, and opportunity. βItβs been a journey,β she reflected. βBut I wouldnβt trade it for anything. WSCO is exactly where I am meant to be.β
